Addicted to gambling

Recommended Posts

My brother is addicted to gambling. We tried a lot to convince him but his habit doesn't seem to stop. He just misused most of our savings by his addiction to playing poker, casino games etc. Can rehabs help my brother to stop gambling. I have contacted an addiction treatment centre named Edgewood Health Network in Toronto which is near us(http://edgewoodhealthnetwork.com/#!). I have heard only that people with alcohol and drug problems will get better at these centres. Are they successful with gambling addiction as well? Has anyone here or any of your relatives gone through this? Please share your experiences.

Hi Bryans, welcome to the site.

Please tell your brother to read this website and even buy the book on Amazon, it's worth it:

I believe reading it could help.

Hello Bryans12,

I am a compulsive gambler and have been for about 20 years.  I was 3 years into recovery, until I relapsed this past summer.  I am currently 1 month free.

In you brothers case, recovery has to start with him.  He has to want to recover and know what he is doing to himself.  You can bring him to therapy, counselling, GA (gamblers anonymous) but if he doesn't want to quit, he will find ways to continue to gamble.  I know since I have done it all already.  I know that you are concerned for his future so I hope he is willing to at least listen to a councillor and see the harm he is doing.

I have not heard of Edgewood before (maybe I should check it out), but there are a lot of resources to help him

- GA

- CAMH

- PInewood

- York region mental health

Those are the ones I have been to.  Each have their pros and cons and hopefully he will find something right for him :D
